Malawi Pig Farm Proposes to Assist Poor and Single Mothers
The Malawi Pig Farm is the brainchild or Harvey Chabinga, Senior Pastor of the 4,000 member plus Alpha Omega Church of Malawi. (Malawi is located in southeast Africa alongside the famous Lake Malawi. It is one of the poorest nations in Africa.
The church of The Living Water in Muscatine, Iowa has partnered with the Alpha Omega Church since 2008. I, Mark Anderson, pastor of the Church of the Living Water, traveled with my wife to Malawi in 2009. We stayed in Pastor Harvey's rented home, slept in his bed, ate his food, and ministered in various churches and villages. Our ministry majored on inspiring the church in Malawi to tithe, trust God and not become dependent on outside money for sustainability. We intend to serve there again in November, 2011 by teaching and monitoring progress on the farms.
We have aided the church there to start a potato farm to feed people and help take the necessary steps to self-sufficiency.
When the Malawi Pig Farm proposal arrived, I knew here was another opportunity for a nation to grow toward self-sufficiency. Please consider what God wants you to do regarding this proposal.
NOTE: The project is in two phases. The first phase involves the pigs and housing for $2,938.32. The second phase involves a truck for $10,000 for transporting the hogs to market.

1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Alpha Omega Bible Church in Malawi is a member of the Malawi Council of Churches .The church has been in existence for the past 7 years. The Church has a membership of 4,300 and a national wide presence. It has 29 full time pastors with 27 congregations located in its 3 territorial regions.
The church’s mission is to transform holistically its church members, the community it works in and bring the word of God, salvation and hope to those in despair.
In keeping with this mission the church intends to venture into a pig farming project to help poor single mothers, the elderly and child headed families. The project will be raising pigs and providing piglets to these people to enable them start their own pig farming business.
The project will operate as a resolving fund where all recipients of the pigs will be required to donate two piglets to another family that is next on the line.
By providing pig farming the recipients will be able to benefit financial gains and profits that will enable their households have proper food, clothing and shelter and also be able to buy medication when ill.
Since we do not have sufficient funds to efficiently carry out this project on our own, we are sending this proposal to you seeking funding for the project. May the Good God bless you immensely as you contemplate assisting us as we endeavor to bring the word of God, salvation and hope to multitudes of people that still need to be ministered to and cared for.
2. PROBLEM STATEMENT
Alpha Omega Bible Church is operating in communities where there a lot of poor singe mothers, elderly and child headed families. These people are economically helpless and hopeless to the extent that they do not have money and or material resources that they could use to support their households by providing nutritive food, medication and proper clothing for themselves and also providing to their own children/siblings in time of need.
The problem has been made worse by the HIV/Aids scourge. A lot of children are also being left with the responsibility of fetching for their siblings.
These families are really desperate as they have no where to turn to for their daily needs. They look to the church as the only institution to help them out of their predicament. However Alpha Omega does not have enough funds to meet the needs of these people whose population is growing by the day.
To address this problem the church agreed to introduce a pig farming project. The project is designed to be giving training to these poor households on basic animal husbandry and other business related subjects and then provide them with start up piglets.
By providing pig farming to the single mothers, the elderly and child headed families they will be able to benefit financial gains and profits that will enable their households have proper food, clothing and shelter and also be able to be buying medication when ill.
However, the project is capital intensive in its initial phase, as it will require construction of housing for the pigs (piggeries) and other necessary structures to support the project. As well as employing/hiring Agricultural Trainers who will be teaching these families basic animal husbandry techniques and other related business techniques.
As a church we presently do not have sufficient funds to effectively carry out the project. We have however have the land, and ready to do labor to kick start the initial phase of the project and we are looking for 2000$ United States Dollars. Or less as per availability of funds
It is with this in mind that Alpha Omega Bible Church decided to write this proposal seeking funding in part or for the whole outstanding budget shortfall.
3. GOALS AND OBJECTS
The project is aimed at bringing financial independence to these poor single mothers, the elderly and child headed families. The project has been designed to reach out to as many people as possible within a short period of time.
Pig farming has been singled out because pigs reproduce at a faster rate. Pig meat is currently on high demand while its local production is very low. It was felt after careful studies that a pig farming project will have long term self sustaining effects in terms of solving the problems which these people face on a daily basis which include lack of financial security, nutritive food and proper shelter since the pigs will be continuously reproducing.
The project has been designed to be a revolving project where the recipients of the piglets will be expected to give two piglets back to the project after the piglets that they received have given birth. These piglets will then be given to another family who will be expected to observe the same process. After giving back the two piglets the remaining pigs and all piglets/pigs that will follow will be theirs.
The research that we carried out found that if the families can take good care of two piglets, within a period of two years they can have a minimum of 8 pigs. We estimated that if we start with 30 families each getting 2 piglets in two years time we will reach a minimum of 80 families or more.
To this end we have already identified a piece of land on which we want to construct a small pig farm and a demonstration school. We have also already drawn building plans for the piggeries.
However the project starting date will depend on availability of funds to role out the same effectively.
4. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The proposed project is a pig farming project. The project aims at giving economic empowerment to poor single mothers, the elderly and child headed families. Funds’ permitting the project has been earmarked to start in October 2011.
The first part of the Project will involve construction of a small pig farm (pig houses), and an office block.
After completion of this phase, the first 30 beneficiaries will be recruited to undergo an intensive training in basic good animal husbandry practices/feed making; business management/book keeping; marketing and entrepreneurship skills.
After completion of the training the beneficiaries will be given two piglets each that they will have to look after. Once the piglets are grown up and have given birth, the beneficiaries will be required to give back two piglets to the project. The project will in turn give the same to another set of beneficiaries who will have undergone the same training.
After giving back the two piglets the original two pigs and all other piglets if any will be the property of the beneficiary.
There will be a punishment for beneficiaries who sell or lose the piglets that they have been given through carelessness on their part. A committee will be set up to ascertain causes of death of the pigs or any disappearance of the same. It will be this committee that will determine action to be taken against such beneficiaries. The recommended punishment if the beneficiary is proved to be at fault is to reimburse the project of the cost of the piglet or the two piglets if all die or are lost.
While the beneficiaries are taking care of the pigs the project will be looking for markets where the beneficiaries shall be selling their pigs. As well as monitoring activities of the beneficiaries and other related out reach services such as vaccinations and artificial inseminations. Once the beneficiaries are established in business, these services will be at a fee to generate income for the project.
To make the project self sustaining it has been agreed that the project should have its own commercial side, where it will be producing and selling piglets to established beneficiaries who want to grow their business as well as to any one else who wants to buy the same.
The project will also offer training on a limited basis to those that can afford to pay to for the same. The project shall also venture into meat production once the first batch of piglets that it shall be using for demonstration at the project have become fully grown up and past their usage at the project.
5. PLAN FOR MEASURING PROJECT RESULTS.
We will measure our Project by the numerous targets that we have set within the project. The Pig Farming Committee has been given targets to be met in terms of, funds to be sourced, quality of work and outreach offered and impact the project will make on the beneficiaries.
The Project Committee will submit a project report every month to the main church committee and to donors of the project.
The Project Committee we will keep detailed, accurate and complete records of funds sourced and expenditures made towards the project.
Upon request, the project committee will provide an audited financial statement of the income and expenditure related to the funds sourced from donors by an independent certified public accountant as documentation that the funds are spent on the purposes for which it was provided.
Further, the main church committee will be closely involved with the project work and will meet monthly to monitor and evaluate progress on the project and to review reports from the project committee and make recommendations.
